Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

7-Keto (7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone-acetate) is a metabolite of DHEA, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It has been promoted as a supplement for enhancing fat metabolism and supporting weight loss, particularly because, unlike DHEA, it is not converted to sex hormones like testosterone or estrogen. Several small-scale clinical studies have explored the potential of 7-keto to support fat metabolism. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that supplementation with 7-keto (typically at doses of 100 mg twice daily) may modestly increase resting metabolic rate in overweight individuals and contribute to greater weight loss when combined with calorie restriction and exercise, compared to placebo. Proposed mechanisms include stimulation of thermogenesis (increased heat production) and enhancement of certain fat-burning enzymes.

However, the body of evidence is limited—studies are generally small, short-term, and often funded by supplement manufacturers. While some statistically significant effects on metabolic rate and weight loss have been observed, these effects are modest, and there is insufficient data on long-term safety and efficacy. Major medical organizations have not endorsed 7-keto for the treatment of obesity or poor fat metabolism. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting its use, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is low, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5 for scientific support.
