Evidence supporting the use of: 3-desoxy-7-KETO-DHEA
For the health condition: Fat Metabolism (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
3-desoxy-7-KETO-DHEA, commonly known as 7-Keto DHEA, is a metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) that has gained popularity as a supplement purported to enhance fat metabolism. Some scientific studies suggest that 7-Keto DHEA might have a modest effect on promoting thermogenesis (the process of heat production in organisms), which could slightly increase resting metabolic rate and potentially support fat loss.
A few small, randomized, placebo-controlled trials in overweight adults have reported that supplementation with 7-Keto DHEA (typically at doses of 100 mg twice daily) may result in greater weight loss and reduction in body fat compared to placebo over 8 weeks, particularly when combined with calorie restriction and exercise. Proposed mechanisms of action include increased activity of thermogenic enzymes such as mitochondrial glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and malic enzyme, without conversion to sex hormones.
However, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are limited. Most studies are small, short-term, and sometimes funded by supplement manufacturers. There is a lack of long-term safety data and robust, independent replication of findings. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary data supporting the use of 3-desoxy-7-KETO-DHEA to support fat metabolism, the evidence is not strong or conclusive, warranting a moderate-low evidence rating.
