Flavonoids are a diverse group of plant compounds known for their antioxidant properties. Scientific evidence suggests that certain flavonoid mixtures, particularly those containing anthocyanins (such as those found in bilberry and blackcurrant), may help support eye health. Several studies have investigated the effects of flavonoid supplementation on visual function, especially in relation to night vision, retinal health, and protection against oxidative stress in ocular tissues. For example, some research indicates that flavonoids can help improve microcirculation in the retina and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy, likely due to their ability to scavenge free radicals and strengthen capillaries.

However, the overall quality and consistency of evidence are moderate. Some clinical trials have demonstrated improvements in visual acuity and retinal function, especially in populations with specific deficiencies or eye conditions, while others have not found significant effects. The evidence is strongest for flavonoids with high levels of anthocyanins, but less robust for general flavonoid mixtures. Therefore, while scientific evidence supports a potential role for certain flavonoids in supporting eye health, more large-scale, high-quality studies are needed to establish definitive benefits for treating poor eyesight in the general population.
