Evidence supporting the use of: Bioflavonoids
For the health condition: Eyesight (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bioflavonoids, a group of plant-derived compounds also known as flavonoids, have been traditionally used to support eye health and vision. This traditional use is rooted in the observation that diets rich in fruits and vegetables—major sources of flavonoids—are associated with better overall eye health. Historically, bioflavonoids have been thought to strengthen capillaries, reduce inflammation, and act as antioxidants, which in turn could benefit the delicate blood vessels in the eyes and help prevent or slow down degenerative eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Some traditional and alternative medicine systems have recommended bioflavonoids for symptoms like poor eyesight or eye fatigue. However, scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of unspecified bioflavonoids for treating or improving poor eyesight is limited. While there are studies exploring certain flavonoids (like those found in bilberry or citrus) for specific eye conditions, comprehensive clinical trials demonstrating efficacy in improving general eyesight are lacking. Most available evidence relates to the antioxidant properties of flavonoids and their potential to support vascular health, which may indirectly benefit eye tissues. Therefore, while bioflavonoids have a history of traditional use for eye health, this is not strongly validated by rigorous modern scientific research.
