Beta-zeacarotene is a type of carotenoid similar to beta-carotene, known for its provitamin A activity. Carotenoids such as beta-carotene have been widely studied for their role in eye health, particularly in preventing or slowing the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and supporting overall visual function. Beta-carotene's benefits are primarily due to its conversion into vitamin A, which is essential for the formation of rhodopsin—a pigment in the retina necessary for low-light and color vision. While beta-zeacarotene is less studied than beta-carotene, it also serves as a provitamin A carotenoid and can be converted to vitamin A in the body, albeit less efficiently. Large clinical studies, such as the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), have shown that high doses of beta-carotene (often combined with other antioxidants and zinc) can modestly reduce the risk of progression to advanced AMD in certain populations. By extension, beta-zeacarotene, as a related compound, is believed to support eye health through similar mechanisms, although direct clinical studies on beta-zeacarotene itself are limited. Therefore, the evidence for beta-zeacarotene's use in supporting eyesight is extrapolated from the broader body of research on provitamin A carotenoids. The evidence is moderate (rated 3/5), reflecting the well-established role of provitamin A carotenoids in vision, but also the lack of specific clinical trials for beta-zeacarotene.
