Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Beta-carotene is scientifically validated as a supportive nutrient for eye health, particularly in the context of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and overall vision maintenance. Beta-carotene is a precursor to vitamin A, an essential nutrient for the formation of rhodopsin, a pigment in the retina that is necessary for vision in low-light conditions. Clinical evidence stems primarily from large-scale studies such as the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), which showed that supplementation with beta-carotene, along with other antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and copper), reduced the risk of progression to advanced AMD in individuals already diagnosed with intermediate or advanced stages of the disease. However, it is important to note that beta-carotene supplementation alone is not recommended for the general population, particularly for smokers, due to an increased risk of lung cancer in this group. Traditional uses of beta-carotene-rich foods, such as carrots, for vision are also widespread, but modern scientific research has substantiated the role of beta-carotene (via its conversion to vitamin A) in preventing night blindness and other symptoms of vitamin A deficiency. Overall, beta-carotene is considered a validated supportive nutrient for maintaining eyesight, especially in the context of preventing or slowing certain degenerative eye conditions, though it is not a cure and should be used as part of a comprehensive nutritional approach.
