Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mallow (Malva sylvestris) has been used traditionally to soothe various inflammatory conditions, including eye irritation and redness. Historical herbal texts cite the topical application of mallow extracts, infusions, or poultices as a folk remedy for “red eyes,” itching, and minor ocular inflammation. The basis for these traditional uses lies in the plant’s mucilage content, which is thought to coat and soothe mucous membranes, potentially providing a demulcent effect. However, while anti-inflammatory and soothing effects have been observed in laboratory studies involving skin and mucosal tissues, direct clinical studies supporting the efficacy of mallow for eye conditions in humans are lacking. There is some pharmacological evidence that mallow extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but these findings have not been specifically translated to ophthalmic use in controlled trials. Therefore, its application for red or itching eyes remains primarily traditional, with limited scientific validation, and should be approached with caution, particularly regarding sterility and safety in ocular use.
