Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Indian Coral Tree (Erythrina variegata) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and other South Asian folk treatments. For eye conditions such as redness or itching, traditional healers have used extracts from the leaves or bark, typically as poultices or washes. Historical Ayurvedic texts and ethnobotanical surveys mention the topical application of its leaf juice to relieve eye irritation, conjunctivitis, and other minor ocular complaints. The presumed mechanism is due to the plant's anti-inflammatory and soothing properties as described anecdotally in traditional practice.

However, scientific validation for these specific uses is limited. While some modern studies have identified anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties in extracts of Erythrina variegata (mainly in vitro or in animal models), these have not directly addressed ocular applications in humans. There are no robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies substantiating its efficacy or safety specifically for red or itchy eyes. Thus, while it is used traditionally and there is some indirect scientific support for its general bioactivity, its use for eye conditions remains primarily supported by historical practice rather than rigorous scientific evidence.
