Evidence supporting the use of: English Plantain
For the health condition: Eyes (red or itching)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
English Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) has a long history of traditional use in supporting eye health, particularly for soothing red or itching eyes. In various European folk medicine practices, the leaves of English Plantain have been used as poultices, eyewashes, or infusions applied directly to the eyes to relieve irritation, conjunctivitis, or allergic symptoms. This traditional use is likely due to its reputed anti-inflammatory and astringent properties, as well as its content of mucilage, which can provide a soothing effect. However, there is very limited scientific research specifically examining Plantago lanceolata for ocular conditions. While laboratory studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in Plantago extracts, these studies are not focused on eye health and are generally in vitro or animal-based. No high-quality clinical trials support its efficacy or safety for treating red or itching eyes in humans. As such, the evidence for this use remains primarily traditional, and while some pharmacological actions may theoretically support its use, robust scientific validation is lacking.
