Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Borneol is traditionally used in Chinese medicine for treating eye conditions such as redness and itching. In classical Chinese materia medica, borneol (冰片, "bing pian") is described as having properties that "clear heat," "dispel wind," and "open the orifices," which are believed to alleviate symptoms like red, swollen, or painful eyes. It is included in several traditional ophthalmic preparations, often combined with other herbs or mineral ingredients, and is also a component in some over-the-counter Chinese eye drops aimed at relieving discomfort.

However, the evidence supporting its efficacy is limited mainly to traditional use and anecdotal reports. There are some contemporary studies on borneol’s pharmacological actions—in particular, its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties—but these are either in vitro or in animal models, and rarely focused directly on eye conditions in humans. There is a lack of robust, high-quality clinical trials assessing its effectiveness for eye redness or itching.

In summary, borneol’s use for eye symptoms is grounded in traditional Chinese medicine, with a modest level of supporting evidence from pharmacological studies that suggest possible relevant effects. Nonetheless, clinical validation remains insufficient, and its use is not established in evidence-based Western ophthalmology.
