Bioflavonoids, a group of plant-derived compounds with antioxidant properties, have historically been used in traditional and alternative medicine to support eye health, particularly for symptoms such as redness or itching. Their use for these conditions is largely based on the belief that their antioxidant effects help reduce inflammation and strengthen capillaries in the eyes. Early 20th-century observations suggested that bioflavonoids (also called vitamin P) might reduce capillary fragility and help with various vascular issues, which could indirectly benefit eye comfort and function. Some animal and small human studies have investigated the potential of specific bioflavonoids, like rutin or quercetin, in reducing inflammation or allergic responses, but these studies are not robust or directly focused on common causes of red or itchy eyes in humans. Modern clinical evidence supporting the use of bioflavonoid mixtures for red or itching eyes is limited and of low quality. Most supporting rationale is extrapolated from their general anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects rather than direct clinical trials for ocular symptoms. As such, while the use of bioflavonoids for red or itching eyes persists in traditional and alternative medicine circles, it lacks strong scientific validation, and its efficacy is not well-established in contemporary medical literature.
