Rating (out of 5): 4

Sardines are a rich natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, as well as vitamin D and vitamin B12. Scientific studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in maintaining eye health, particularly in relation to the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and dry eye syndrome. Several large epidemiological studies, including the AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study), have found that higher dietary intake of omega-3s is associated with a reduced risk of AMD progression. Similarly, clinical trials have demonstrated that omega-3 supplementation can help improve symptoms of dry eye disease by modulating inflammation and supporting the tear film.

Sardines, being a whole food source, provide these nutrients in a bioavailable form. The high vitamin D content in sardines may also contribute to eye health, as low vitamin D status has been linked in some studies to increased risk of certain eye diseases, though this evidence is less robust than for omega-3s. While sardines are not traditionally associated with eye health in folk medicine, their nutritional composition and scientific evidence support their inclusion in diets aimed at supporting the eyes. Overall, the use of sardines for eye health is supported by modern nutritional science, particularly due to their omega-3 fatty acid content.
