Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) is a family of growth factors involved in many biological processes, including development, wound healing, and tissue maintenance. Regarding the eye, FGFs—especially FGF-2—have been studied for their roles in ocular development, maintenance of corneal health, and potential in repairing retinal and corneal injuries. Experimental research and some early clinical studies show that FGFs can promote corneal epithelial wound healing and may protect retinal neurons from degeneration. For example, topical FGF-2 has been found to accelerate corneal wound closure in animal models, and laboratory studies have shown neuroprotective effects in models of retinal injury.

However, these uses are primarily within research and clinical trial contexts. There is limited evidence from large human trials supporting routine use of FGF supplements or therapies in eye diseases. Most products marketed for "eye health" with FGF have limited substantiation beyond laboratory and early-stage clinical research. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence for FGF's benefit in specific ophthalmic conditions, robust clinical validation and widespread clinical use are lacking. The evidence for FGF as a general supplement to “support the eye’s body system” is modest (rated 2/5) and should be interpreted with caution pending further research.
