Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Celosia, particularly Celosia argentea, has been used in traditional medicine systems, especially in Chinese herbal medicine, to support eye health. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the seeds of Celosia (known as "Qing Xiang Zi") are frequently prescribed for conditions such as eye redness, swelling, and pain, and are believed to help "clear liver heat" that is thought to affect the eyes. Historical texts and materia medica from China document this use, and formulas containing Celosia seeds are still in use today for eye-related complaints. However, scientific studies directly validating these traditional uses for eye health are limited. Some laboratory research has identified antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in extracts of Celosia, which could theoretically benefit eye tissues, but robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Thus, support for Celosia’s use in eye health is grounded primarily in tradition, with limited preliminary scientific exploration and no high-quality clinical trials to date.
