Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Calamari oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, particularly docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which are known to play essential roles in maintaining eye health. DHA, in particular, is a major structural component of the retina. Scientific studies have indicated that sufficient intake of DHA may help protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and dry eye syndrome. Several clinical trials and epidemiological studies have reported that diets high in omega-3 fatty acids, including those from marine sources such as calamari oil, are associated with a reduced risk of various eye conditions.

However, most of the supporting evidence is indirect, based on the general benefits of omega-3s on eye health rather than head-to-head studies specifically evaluating calamari oil. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and other regulatory bodies recognize the contribution of DHA to the maintenance of normal vision. While calamari oil is a good source of these fatty acids, there are few studies directly comparing it to other marine oils such as fish oil regarding efficacy for eye health. Thus, the scientific justification for using calamari oil specifically to support the eyes is moderate, primarily due to its DHA and EPA content, but not due to any unique property of calamari oil itself.
