Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 5

Vitamin A (including its form, vitamin A palmitate) is scientifically validated as essential for eye health. Its most well-established role is in the prevention and treatment of night blindness and xerophthalmia, conditions associated with vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A is a critical component of rhodopsin, a protein in the retina that absorbs light, thereby enabling vision in low-light conditions. Deficiency in vitamin A leads to impaired dark adaptation and, if severe, can cause irreversible blindness due to corneal ulceration and keratomalacia.

Multiple clinical studies and public health interventions have demonstrated that vitamin A supplementation can dramatically reduce the incidence of blindness in populations at risk for deficiency, especially in children. The World Health Organization recognizes vitamin A supplementation as a key public health strategy for preventing blindness in developing countries. In addition, the use of vitamin A in the form of palmitate is a common method of supplementation, as it is stable and easily absorbed when taken orally.

However, in populations with adequate dietary vitamin A, additional supplementation does not appear to provide extra benefit for eye health and may, in fact, pose toxicity risks if taken in excess. In summary, the use of vitamin A to treat or prevent deficiency-related eye problems is strongly supported by scientific evidence.
