Evidence supporting the use of: Pycnogenol
For the health condition: Eye Problems
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Pycnogenol, a proprietary extract from French maritime pine bark, has been investigated for its potential benefits in supporting eye health, particularly in relation to microvascular function and diabetic retinopathy. Several clinical studies and reviews suggest that Pycnogenol may improve retinal microcirculation and reduce retinal edema, particularly in early diabetic retinopathy. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant action, stabilization of capillary walls, and improvement of endothelial function.
A 2011 study published in Phytotherapy Research found that supplementation with Pycnogenol improved retinal edema and visual acuity in patients with early diabetic retinopathy. Another randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics (2007) reported improved retinal blood flow and reduction of micro-hemorrhages in diabetic patients. Pycnogenol’s benefits are attributed to its ability to scavenge free radicals, inhibit inflammation, and strengthen blood vessel walls.
However, while these results are promising, most studies are relatively small, short-term, and focus on diabetic populations. There is limited evidence for its use in other eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration or glaucoma. Larger, long-term trials are needed to confirm these findings and better establish safety and efficacy. Overall, Pycnogenol is supported by moderate scientific evidence for use in early diabetic retinopathy, but it should not replace standard medical care.
