Evidence supporting the use of: Omega-3 fatty acids
For the health condition: Eye Problems
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have substantial scientific evidence supporting their use in eye health, especially for the management of dry eye syndrome and possibly age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that omega-3 supplementation can reduce symptoms of dry eye disease, likely by improving the function of the meibomian glands and reducing ocular surface inflammation. The DREAM study (2018), a large multicenter trial, found mixed results, but other studies and clinical experience continue to support a modest benefit, especially in patients with dietary deficiencies.
For age-related macular degeneration, observational studies such as the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) have suggested that higher dietary intake of omega-3s is associated with a lower risk of progression to advanced AMD. However, interventional studies have not consistently demonstrated a statistically significant benefit for omega-3 supplementation in preventing AMD progression, leading to ongoing debate in the field.
Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential structural components of retinal photoreceptor membranes, supporting overall retinal function. Given the safety profile and the biological plausibility, many clinicians recommend omega-3 supplementation for supporting ocular surface and retinal health, especially in individuals with low dietary intake.
