Evidence supporting the use of: Arisaema erubescens
For the health condition: Eye Problems
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Arisaema erubescens is a plant used in traditional medicine systems, particularly within the Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) frameworks. In these traditions, the tuber of Arisaema species (often referred to as "Arisaema" or "Tian Nan Xing" in TCM) is used for a variety of ailments, including those related to the eyes. Historical texts sometimes mention its use to address "eye opacity," "cloudiness," or general eye discomfort, often as part of complex herbal formulations rather than as a standalone treatment. However, the evidence for its efficacy in treating eye problems is largely anecdotal and based on tradition rather than scientific validation.
There is very limited scientific research directly investigating the effect of Arisaema erubescens on eye conditions. Most modern pharmacological studies focus on its anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, or neuroprotective properties, and do not address ocular health specifically. Additionally, the raw tuber is known to be toxic and must be processed to reduce its irritant properties, which further complicates its use. Given this, while Arisaema erubescens holds a place in traditional medicine for eye-related uses, there is little scientific evidence to support these claims, and its use should be approached with caution.
