Thaumatococcus daniellii, commonly known as the "miracle fruit" or "sweet prayer plant," is primarily recognized for its sweet-tasting protein, thaumatin, but it has also been utilized in various African traditional medicine systems. In some parts of West Africa, the leaves and extracts of T. daniellii have been used in folk remedies, including topical applications for minor wounds and, occasionally, for eye infections or irritations. This use is based on ethnobotanical records and oral traditions rather than rigorous scientific validation.

There is, however, a lack of robust clinical or pharmacological studies specifically investigating the efficacy or safety of T. daniellii for treating eye infections. While some laboratory studies have explored the plant's general antimicrobial properties, these do not directly translate to effectiveness against pathogens causing eye infections, nor do they address issues of formulation, dosing, or ocular safety. No peer-reviewed clinical trials or in vivo studies specifically support the use of this plant for ophthalmic conditions.
