Evidence supporting the use of: Sesame Oil
For the health condition: Eye Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sesame oil has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for eye health and the treatment of eye infections. In Ayurvedic practice, sesame oil is sometimes used in therapies like Netra Tarpana (eye bathing) and as a base for medicated eye drops, believed to soothe and nourish the eyes and alleviate symptoms of irritation or infection. The practice is based on the oil’s purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which are described in traditional texts. However, the scientific evidence supporting sesame oil’s efficacy specifically for eye infections is limited. Modern research has demonstrated that sesame oil contains antioxidant and mild antimicrobial compounds, such as sesamol and sesamin, but clinical studies evaluating its effectiveness and safety in treating eye infections in humans are lacking. Furthermore, direct application of oils to the eyes can carry risks, such as irritation or introduction of contaminants. As such, while the use of sesame oil for eye infections is supported by traditional medicine, there is insufficient scientific validation, and its use should not replace evidence-based medical treatments for ocular infections.
