For the health condition: Eye Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Rubus species, which include raspberries and blackberries, have been used in traditional medicine systems for various ailments, including eye infections. Ethnobotanical records indicate that preparations made from the leaves or fruits of certain Rubus species were sometimes applied topically or used as washes for eye complaints in folk medicine, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia. The rationale was often based on the astringent properties of tannins found in Rubus leaves, which were believed to reduce inflammation or help cleanse the eyes.
However, rigorous scientific studies evaluating the efficacy of Rubus species for treating eye infections are lacking. The documented traditional use does not appear to have been systematically validated by clinical trials or modern pharmacological research. While Rubus extracts do contain polyphenols and other compounds with general antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, there is no direct evidence supporting their use for eye infections specifically. Therefore, its use for this purpose remains rooted in tradition, with minimal scientific backing.
