Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Phellodendron (commonly known as Huang Bai in traditional Chinese medicine) has been traditionally used in East Asian medicine for a variety of inflammatory and infectious conditions, including eye infections such as conjunctivitis. In the context of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Phellodendron bark is thought to clear "heat" and "dampness," which are considered underlying causes of red, swollen, or infected eyes. Classical TCM texts and materia medica frequently reference its use in formulas for eye complaints, often in combination with other herbs like Coptis or Scutellaria. However, modern scientific validation for Phellodendron’s efficacy specifically for eye infections is limited. Some laboratory studies indicate that extracts of Phellodendron bark possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which could, in theory, be beneficial for infections. Berberine, a major alkaloid in Phellodendron, has demonstrated activity against various bacteria and is sometimes used in ophthalmic solutions in China. Still, robust clinical trials evaluating Phellodendron (or its extracts) alone for the treatment of eye infections in humans are lacking. Therefore, while the traditional use is well-documented, current scientific support is modest and indirect.
