For the health condition: Eye Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Centipeda (most commonly referring to Centipeda minima) is used in traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese herbal medicine, to support or treat eye infections. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this herb—known as Eri Cao (鹅耳草)—is believed to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties and is included in various formulations for conditions described as "eye swelling," "redness," or "infections of the eye." Historical texts and pharmacopeias from East Asia document its use for superficial ocular complaints, often in the form of topical washes or decoctions.
However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. While some in vitro studies suggest that extracts of Centipeda minima possess antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activity, these studies are preliminary and not specific to eye pathogens or clinical scenarios. There is a lack of robust animal studies or human clinical trials evaluating its safety and effectiveness for eye infections. Thus, its use for eye infections is supported primarily by tradition rather than by high-quality scientific evidence. Modern clinical guidelines do not recognize Centipeda as a standard treatment for ocular infections. Caution is warranted, as herbal remedies applied to the eye can carry risks of irritation or contamination.
