Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

The Asoka tree (Saraca asoca) is an important plant in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, primarily recognized for its use in gynecological disorders. Its use for eye infections is not prominent in the core Ayurvedic texts, but some regional or folk traditions have attributed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties to various parts of the tree, including the bark and flowers. These properties have occasionally led to its inclusion in polyherbal formulations aimed at treating eye conditions, especially in traditional Indian medicine systems.

However, there is minimal direct historical documentation for the Asoka tree as a primary treatment for eye infections. Most references, even in traditional contexts, are indirect or anecdotal. Moreover, scientific literature on the efficacy of Saraca asoca extracts for treating eye infections is extremely limited. Very few laboratory studies have evaluated its antimicrobial activity, and none have specifically focused on ocular pathogens or clinical outcomes in eye infections. Therefore, the use of Asoka tree for eye infections is justified primarily by traditional or folk use rather than by robust scientific or historical evidence, and the evidence supporting this application is weak.
