Ligandrol (LGD-4033) is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that has been investigated for its potential to increase muscle mass and strength, which are relevant to exercise performance and recovery. Several early-phase clinical trials and preclinical studies suggest that Ligandrol can promote increases in lean body mass and muscle strength in both healthy volunteers and individuals with muscle-wasting conditions. For example, a 2013 randomized controlled trial published in "The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism" found that healthy men administered LGD-4033 for 21 days experienced dose-dependent increases in lean body mass without significant adverse effects. Preclinical studies in animal models have also shown similar anabolic effects. However, it should be noted that evidence supporting Ligandrol’s use to support or treat exercise-related outcomes in the general population is still limited. Most research to date has focused on safety, pharmacokinetics, and short-term anabolic effects. There is a lack of large, long-term clinical trials evaluating its efficacy and safety for exercise enhancement or muscle recovery. Additionally, the use of Ligandrol is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) due to its performance-enhancing properties and potential risks. In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence (rated 3/5) that Ligandrol can increase muscle mass and strength, supporting its potential use in the context of exercise, but concerns about safety, legality, and the lack of robust long-term data remain.
