Evidence supporting the use of: Glycine propionyl-l-carnitine
For the health condition: Exercise
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Glycine propionyl-L-carnitine (GPLC) is a derivative of L-carnitine, combining propionyl-L-carnitine and glycine. It is often marketed as a supplement to support exercise performance, particularly for its purported effects on nitric oxide (NO) production, blood flow, and reduction of exercise-induced oxidative stress. Several scientific studies have evaluated GPLC in the context of exercise. A notable randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study by Bloomer et al. (2007) found that acute and chronic supplementation with GPLC significantly increased plasma nitrate/nitrite (NOx) levels and improved high-intensity anaerobic exercise performance in resistance-trained men. Other research has reported that GPLC may reduce markers of oxidative stress and muscle damage following intense exercise.
However, the number of high-quality, large-scale human studies is limited. Most research has focused on small sample sizes and short intervention periods. Some studies have found only modest or inconsistent effects, and meta-analyses are lacking. Despite this, the available scientific literature does provide evidence that GPLC can benefit exercise capacity and recovery, most likely through enhanced nitric oxide-mediated vasodilation and antioxidant properties. Thus, its use is scientifically supported but the strength of evidence is moderate (rated 3/5), warranting further research for definitive conclusions.
