Evidence supporting the use of: Citrulline silicate
For the health condition: Exercise
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Citrulline silicate is a compound that combines L-citrulline and silicon. Its use in exercise support is primarily based on its role as a nitric oxide (NO) booster, similar to other citrulline supplements. L-citrulline is a non-essential amino acid that is converted to L-arginine in the body, which in turn increases nitric oxide production. Increased NO can promote vasodilation, potentially improving blood flow, nutrient delivery, and exercise performance.
A handful of small studies and pilot trials have investigated citrulline silicate specifically. Most of the available scientific evidence relates to L-citrulline or citrulline malate, which have shown modest improvements in exercise performance, muscular endurance, and reduced fatigue, especially in resistance training contexts. For citrulline silicate, the evidence is limited but promising: a 2016 pilot study (Jäger et al.) observed improved exercise performance and increased serum arginine and silicon levels in healthy adults, suggesting it may be a bioavailable form of both nutrients. However, these findings are preliminary and based on small sample sizes.
Overall, the support for citrulline silicate in exercise enhancement is scientific but still emerging, with evidence strength rated as 2 out of 5 due to limited and early-stage research. More robust, large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish optimal dosing.
