Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Betaine nitrate combines betaine (trimethylglycine) and nitrate, both of which have been individually studied for potential roles in exercise enhancement. Betaine is thought to support exercise performance by acting as a methyl donor, potentially aiding in homocysteine metabolism, cellular hydration, and possibly muscle power output. Nitrates, such as those found in beetroot, are known to increase nitric oxide availability, which can promote vasodilation and potentially enhance blood flow and exercise efficiency.

However, while both constituents have some evidence supporting their individual use, studies specifically evaluating betaine nitrate as a compound are limited. Some small studies suggest that betaine supplementation can modestly improve certain exercise performance parameters, such as power output and endurance, but findings are inconsistent and not always statistically significant. Nitrate supplementation, meanwhile, has a stronger body of evidence for improving time-to-exhaustion and reducing oxygen cost in endurance exercise.

Combined, betaine nitrate is marketed as a supplement for exercise performance, but direct clinical trials on the compound itself are scarce. The rating of 2 reflects that there is some preliminary or indirect scientific rationale for its use, but robust, direct evidence in the context of exercise performance is lacking. More well-designed, independent studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for this application.
