HMR lignan, also known as hydroxymatairesinol, is a plant lignan found predominantly in the knots of the Norway spruce. It is metabolized in the human gut to enterolactone, a type of phytoestrogen, which can weakly bind to estrogen receptors in the body. Scientific studies have shown that phytoestrogens like enterolactone may modulate estrogenic activity, potentially supporting hormonal balance in both pre- and post-menopausal individuals. Some clinical and epidemiological research suggests that higher intake of dietary lignans is associated with beneficial effects on breast health, cardiovascular health, and menopausal symptoms, though findings are not always consistent. HMR lignan supplementation has been shown to increase serum enterolactone levels, indicating bioavailability. However, while there is a clear mechanistic rationale and some human studies supporting HMR lignan’s role in supporting the estrogen body system, evidence from large, long-term randomized controlled trials remains limited. Therefore, the use of HMR lignan for estrogen support is justified by moderate scientific validation, but more robust clinical research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety profile for specific estrogen-related outcomes.
