Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Massularia acuminata is traditionally used in West African ethnomedicine as an aphrodisiac and for the management of male sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction. The stem and root extracts are particularly popular in Nigerian folk medicine, where they are chewed or used in concoctions aimed at enhancing libido and sexual performance. While several preclinical studies (mostly in rodents) have suggested that extracts of Massularia acuminata may increase testosterone levels and improve certain markers of sexual behavior (such as mounting frequency and latency), robust human clinical studies are lacking. The available evidence thus far is limited to animal models and in vitro studies, which indicate potential androgenic and aphrodisiac effects, but these findings have not been validated in humans or translated into standardized clinical recommendations. As such, the use of Massularia acuminata for erectile dysfunction is supported primarily by traditional practices and anecdotal reports, with modest preclinical evidence but no high-quality clinical trials to confirm its efficacy or safety in humans.
