Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Curculigo, particularly Curculigo orchioides (commonly known as "Kali Musli"), has a long-standing history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine as an aphrodisiac and general tonic. Traditional texts describe its application for male reproductive health, including improving sexual vigor and treating erectile dysfunction (ED). The root is often included in herbal formulations intended to enhance libido and sexual performance.
Scientific research is limited but growing. Some animal studies suggest that Curculigo orchioides extracts may have androgenic and pro-erectile effects, possibly due to their influence on testosterone levels, antioxidant properties, or modulation of nitric oxide pathways. For example, certain studies in rats have shown increased mounting behavior and improved sperm quality. However, these effects have not been robustly confirmed in human clinical trials. Available evidence in humans is either anecdotal or stems from formulations containing multiple herbs, making it difficult to attribute effects specifically to Curculigo.
Therefore, the justification for using Curculigo for erectile dysfunction is based primarily on traditional use, with only preliminary scientific support from animal models. High-quality, controlled human studies are lacking, and more research is needed to validate efficacy and safety for this indication.
