Curculigo orchioides, commonly known as Kali Musli, has a long-standing reputation in traditional medicine systems—especially Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine—as an aphrodisiac and remedy for male sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction (ED). Its roots and rhizomes are used in various herbal formulations intended to improve sexual health, vitality, and libido. Historical Ayurvedic texts cite its use for “Vajikarana” (aphrodisiac therapy), which is believed to enhance sexual performance and treat impotence. The plant is often prescribed in combination with other herbs as part of multi-component remedies.
However, while there is a traditional basis for its use, scientific studies are limited and mostly preclinical. A few animal studies suggest that extracts of Curculigo orchioides may improve sexual behavior parameters, increase testosterone levels, and enhance sperm count in rats. These effects are attributed to its saponins and flavonoids, which may influence endocrine function and oxidative stress. Despite these findings, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and there is insufficient high-quality evidence to confirm its efficacy or safety for erectile dysfunction in clinical settings.
In summary, Curculigo orchioides is traditionally used for ED, with some preliminary pharmacological support from animal studies, but its use is not yet validated by substantial clinical research.
