Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2
Cnidium (Cnidium monnieri) is a plant commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the treatment of sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction (ED). The use of Cnidium is well-documented in historical texts, where it is reputed to "invigorate the kidneys" and "warm yang," concepts in TCM linked to male sexual health. Traditionally, the seeds (She Chuang Zi) are most frequently used, both alone and in combination with other herbs. The main active compound, osthole, has shown some pharmacological activity in preclinical studies, such as promoting nitric oxide release and enhancing blood flow, which could be beneficial for erectile function. However, these effects have mainly been observed in animal models or in vitro studies, and there is a lack of robust human clinical trials. As such, while traditional use is strong and there is some preliminary scientific rationale, the overall level of scientific evidence is limited. Most usage and recommendations are based on historical practice rather than rigorous clinical validation.
