Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Hedyotis diffusa, also known as Oldenlandia diffusa or Bai Hua She She Cao in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is traditionally used in China and other parts of East Asia to "clear heat" and "detoxify" the body. In TCM, these terms are associated with reducing infections and inflammation, although the language and framework differ from modern biomedical terminology. It has been used historically for various conditions, including certain infections, cancer, and hepatitis. Regarding Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), there is no direct mention in classical TCM literature of Hedyotis diffusa specifically treating EBV, as the virus was not identified until the 20th century. However, its use for general viral infections, sore throats, and immune support has led some practitioners to recommend it as part of herbal formulations for EBV-related symptoms, such as infectious mononucleosis. Scientifically, while Hedyotis diffusa demonstrates some in vitro antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects, there is no clinical research directly linking its use to improved outcomes in EBV infection in humans. Current usage for EBV is therefore primarily based on traditional principles and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific validation. The evidence level supporting its use for EBV is weak, with no controlled clinical trials or high-quality studies available as of mid-2024.
