Evidence supporting the use of: Sophora flavescens
For the health condition: Enteritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sophora flavescens (commonly known as Ku Shen) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for treating gastrointestinal disorders, including enteritis, which is inflammation of the intestine. Historically, Ku Shen has been employed for its "heat-clearing" and "dampness-drying" properties, and it is believed to help with diarrhea, dysentery, and other inflammatory conditions of the gut. The use is primarily grounded in TCM texts, where Ku Shen is often found in classical herbal formulas aimed at resolving intestinal inflammation and infection.
Modern research on Sophora flavescens for enteritis is limited but suggests potential anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities due to compounds like matrine and oxymatrine. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that these alkaloids may reduce inflammatory cytokine levels and inhibit certain pathogens linked to enteric infections. However, robust human clinical trials are lacking, and therefore the scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for enteritis remains weak. As such, while traditional use is well-established, strong clinical validation is absent, and the overall evidence rating is modest.
