Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium animalis
For the health condition: Enteritis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Bifidobacterium animalis is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its potential benefits in gastrointestinal health, including the management of enteritis, which refers to inflammation of the small intestine often caused by infection or other irritants. Scientific evidence suggests that certain strains of B. animalis (notably B. animalis subsp. lactis) can help support gut barrier function, modulate immune responses, and inhibit pathogenic bacteria, all of which are mechanisms relevant to the mitigation of enteritis symptoms.
Several randomized controlled trials and animal studies have investigated the effects of B. animalis in models of infectious and antibiotic-associated diarrhea, which are common manifestations of enteritis. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that supplementation with B. animalis can reduce the duration and severity of acute infectious diarrhea in children, and animal studies demonstrate its ability to reduce inflammatory markers in chemically induced enteritis.
However, while there is a moderate level of evidence supporting the use of B. animalis for general intestinal inflammation and associated diarrhea, direct evidence for its efficacy specifically in enteritis (apart from broader diarrheal disease or colitis models) is less robust. Most human studies focus on related but not identical conditions. Therefore, the evidence supports a possible benefit, but further targeted clinical trials would be needed to warrant a higher evidence rating.
