Bifidobacterium adolescentis is a commensal probiotic bacterium commonly found in the human gut, and its potential use in treating or supporting enteritis (inflammation of the intestine) has been explored in scientific studies, though the evidence is still considered preliminary. Several in vitro and animal studies suggest that B. adolescentis may exert beneficial effects on gut inflammation by modulating the intestinal microbiota, enhancing mucosal barrier function, and producing short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, which have anti-inflammatory properties. For example, some mouse models of colitis (a form of enteritis) have demonstrated that administration of B. adolescentis reduced inflammatory markers and improved intestinal histology.
In human studies, the evidence is limited. A few small clinical trials and observational studies have noted that B. adolescentis levels are often reduced in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other forms of enteritis, and probiotic supplementation (sometimes including B. adolescentis in a multi-strain product) has been associated with mild improvements in symptoms. However, high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically investigating B. adolescentis as a monotherapy for enteritis in humans are scarce.
Overall, while there is scientific rationale and some supportive findings from preclinical models, robust clinical evidence is lacking. The current evidence base would be rated as weak to moderate (2 out of 5), and further research is needed to establish efficacy and safety in human enteritis.
