Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aloe vera has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems for addressing various digestive ailments, including enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine). In traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, aloe vera gel has been used to soothe gastrointestinal irritation, reduce inflammation, and promote healing of the digestive tract. The mucilaginous gel is believed to coat mucosal surfaces and exert anti-inflammatory effects, which could theoretically be beneficial in cases of enteritis.

However, the scientific evidence supporting the use of aloe vera specifically for enteritis is limited and primarily consists of in vitro studies or animal models rather than robust clinical trials in humans. Some studies suggest that aloe vera exhibits anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antimicrobial properties, which may help alleviate symptoms of enteritis. For example, polysaccharides in aloe vera gel have been shown to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines in laboratory studies. A few small clinical studies have investigated the use of aloe vera in inflammatory bowel diseases (such as ulcerative colitis), with mixed results; nevertheless, these findings cannot be directly extrapolated to all cases of enteritis.

Overall, while aloe vera’s use for enteritis is grounded in tradition and supported by its general anti-inflammatory and mucosal-protective properties, strong scientific evidence in human subjects is lacking. Its use should be approached with caution, especially given the potential for adverse effects such as diarrhea or electrolyte imbalance with oral ingestion.
