Suma (Pfaffia paniculata), also known as “Brazilian ginseng,” has a long history of use in traditional South American medicine as a general tonic and adaptogen. Indigenous peoples and herbalists have used suma root for centuries to help increase stamina, combat fatigue, and improve overall vitality. The plant is sometimes called “para tudo,” meaning “for everything,” reflecting its role as a multipurpose remedy in folk medicine. Traditional practitioners believe suma helps the body adapt to stress and supports physical endurance. While these traditional uses are well documented in ethnobotanical literature, modern scientific validation is limited. Some laboratory studies have identified compounds in suma, such as pfaffic acids and saponins, which may have adaptogenic, immunomodulatory, or anti-inflammatory effects that could theoretically support energy and resilience. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains anecdotal or based on animal research.
