Scallion (Allium fistulosum), also known as green onion or spring onion, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), scallion is believed to have warming properties and is used to support the body's "Qi" (energy) when it is deficient or when an individual is experiencing fatigue, especially at the onset of colds or chills. The TCM rationale is based on the idea that scallion helps to stimulate circulation and dispel "wind-cold," thereby invigorating the body's natural energy and resistance. However, this use is rooted in traditional concepts rather than modern biomedical understanding.
From a scientific perspective, there is little direct evidence to support the use of scallion specifically for treating or supporting energy deficiency. While scallions contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that may contribute to general health, there are no well-conducted clinical studies demonstrating a direct effect on fatigue, energy levels, or conditions related to energy deficiency. Most of the evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional use rather than empirical scientific validation. Therefore, while scallion’s use for supporting energy is justified in the context of tradition, the scientific evidence is weak or indirect.
