Oxygen therapy is scientifically validated for treating low energy levels when the underlying cause is hypoxemia (low blood oxygen levels). Oxygen is essential for cellular respiration, the process by which cells generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body's main energy currency. When oxygen levels are insufficient, as occurs in conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, or severe anemia, patients often experience fatigue and decreased energy. Supplemental oxygen increases the availability of oxygen to tissues, improving ATP production and alleviating symptoms of fatigue in these individuals. Numerous clinical trials and guidelines support the use of supplemental oxygen in people with chronic respiratory illnesses to improve exercise tolerance and reduce fatigue. However, for individuals with normal oxygen saturation, supplemental oxygen has not been shown to enhance energy or performance. In healthy people, or those with fatigue not related to hypoxemia, oxygen supplementation does not provide a meaningful energy boost. Thus, while oxygen therapy is scientifically validated for treating low energy due to hypoxemia, its use for general fatigue without an underlying oxygen deficit is not supported by the evidence.
