Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are fats commonly derived from coconut oil or palm kernel oil and are composed of medium-length fatty acids. Their use to support energy levels is scientifically validated, though the overall strength of evidence is moderate.
MCTs are metabolized differently than long-chain triglycerides (LCTs). They are rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and transported directly to the liver, where they are quickly converted into ketones and used for energy rather than being stored as fat. This unique metabolic pathway makes MCTs a readily available energy source, especially valuable for individuals with impaired fat absorption or increased energy needs.
Several clinical studies have investigated the effects of MCTs on energy levels and exercise performance. Some research indicates that MCT supplementation can increase energy expenditure and enhance endurance during moderate-intensity exercise, likely due to increased ketone production. MCTs have also been used therapeutically in people with certain medical conditions, such as malabsorption syndromes or epilepsy, where rapid energy access is beneficial.
However, evidence supporting generalized use of MCTs for combating fatigue in healthy individuals is mixed. While the rapid conversion to energy is well documented, large-scale and long-term studies showing substantial improvements in subjective energy levels or exercise performance are limited. Most benefits are modest and may be more relevant for specific populations than for the general public.
