Evidence supporting the use of: L-tyrosine
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
L-tyrosine is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to several important neurotransmitters, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. These neurotransmitters play roles in regulating mood, alertness, and the body's response to stress, which has led to interest in using L-tyrosine to support energy levels, particularly in situations of acute stress or fatigue. Several small clinical studies have investigated the effects of L-tyrosine on cognitive and physical performance under stressful conditions such as cold exposure, sleep deprivation, and multitasking. These studies suggest that L-tyrosine supplementation may help mitigate the decline in cognitive performance during acute stress, which could be perceived as supporting "energy" or alertness. However, the evidence for L-tyrosine as a general energy booster in healthy, non-stressed adults is weak. Most studies do not show a significant effect on baseline energy levels or fatigue in typical day-to-day situations. Instead, benefits appear to be limited to scenarios where neurotransmitter depletion is likely, such as prolonged stress or excessive workload. The overall quality and size of studies are modest, and more research is needed to confirm and clarify its role. Thus, while there is some scientific basis for using L-tyrosine in specific stressful or fatiguing conditions, its effectiveness as a general energy enhancer is not strongly supported.
