Evidence supporting the use of: Guayusa
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Guayusa (Ilex guayusa) is an Amazonian holly tree whose leaves have been used traditionally by indigenous peoples of Ecuador for their stimulating effects. The primary reason for its use to address lack of energy is its naturally high caffeine content—comparable to or slightly less than that of coffee. For centuries, Kichwa and other indigenous groups have brewed guayusa leaves into a tea consumed early in the morning or before night hunting to promote alertness, combat fatigue, and enhance stamina. These rituals underscore a deep cultural belief in guayusa as an energizing plant.
While modern scientific research specifically on guayusa is limited, its energizing effects are biologically plausible because caffeine is a well-established central nervous system stimulant. Guayusa also contains theobromine, another mild stimulant found in chocolate, which may contribute to its effects. Anecdotal reports and traditional usage align, but there are few clinical studies directly assessing guayusa for energy, so the evidence rating is moderate (3/5), largely based on tradition and the known effects of its chemical constituents rather than robust human trials.
In summary, the use of guayusa for energy is justified by longstanding traditional practices and supported by its caffeine content, but lacks strong scientific validation from controlled studies. Most available evidence is ethnobotanical or derives from extrapolation of caffeine’s effects rather than direct research on guayusa itself.
