Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Certain fungi, particularly medicinal mushrooms such as Cordyceps sinensis and Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), have been traditionally used in Asian medicine to combat fatigue and increase stamina. In recent years, scientific studies have begun to investigate these claims. For example, Cordyceps has been shown in some small-scale human and animal studies to improve exercise performance and reduce fatigue, possibly through mechanisms such as increased ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production and improved oxygen utilization (source). Some trials of Reishi have also suggested potential for reducing fatigue in cancer patients, though results are mixed and more research is needed (source). However, the overall quality and size of the studies are limited, and meta-analyses often call for larger, more rigorously controlled clinical trials to confirm efficacy. While there is a promising scientific basis for the use of some fungi in supporting energy and reducing fatigue, the evidence is not yet strong enough to be considered conclusive. As such, fungi like Cordyceps and Reishi are sometimes included in supplements marketed for energy, but their effects should be viewed as potentially beneficial rather than definitively proven.
