D-Ribose is a naturally occurring pentose sugar that plays a critical role in the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy carrier in cells. Its use as a supplement to support or treat energy deficiency is based on its role in replenishing ATP, particularly in situations where cellular energy stores are depleted, such as in certain metabolic or cardiac conditions. Some small clinical studies and pilot trials have evaluated D-ribose supplementation in people with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and heart disease, reporting improvements in subjective measures of energy, exercise tolerance, and well-being. For example, a 2006 pilot study (Teitelbaum et al.) found that D-ribose improved energy, sleep, and overall well-being in patients with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. However, these studies often have limitations such as small sample sizes, lack of rigorous controls, and potential for bias.
