Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Coffee fruit, also known as coffee cherry, is the fruit that surrounds the coffee bean. In recent years, coffee fruit extracts have gained popularity as an ingredient in supplements targeting energy, cognitive performance, and general well-being. The rationale for its use to support energy primarily stems from its natural caffeine content, though coffee fruit typically contains less caffeine than the roasted coffee bean. Caffeine is a well-established stimulant that can temporarily enhance alertness and reduce perceived fatigue, and its efficacy is widely supported by scientific literature.

Some commercially available coffee fruit extracts also claim to preserve other phytonutrients, such as polyphenols and antioxidants, which may have additional health benefits; however, these do not directly contribute to increased energy levels. There is limited scientific research specifically examining coffee fruit (as opposed to roasted coffee or isolated caffeine) for its effects on energy. One small human study suggested that coffee fruit extract may increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which could have implications for cognitive function, but the evidence for a direct energizing effect beyond that of caffeine is weak.

In summary, while there is scientific basis for the energizing properties of caffeine present in coffee fruit, robust clinical evidence specifically for coffee fruit’s effectiveness in treating or supporting energy levels is limited. Thus, the evidence supporting coffee fruit for this use rates a 2 out of 5.
