Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Citrulline alpha-ketoglutarate (CAKG) is a compound that combines the amino acid citrulline with alpha-ketoglutarate, a key intermediate in the Krebs (citric acid) cycle. Both constituents have been studied individually for their potential impact on energy metabolism and exercise performance.

Citrulline is known to increase plasma arginine levels, which may enhance nitric oxide (NO) production, leading to improved blood flow and nutrient delivery to working muscles. Some clinical studies with citrulline malate—a related compound—have shown modest improvements in exercise capacity, reduced fatigue, and better recovery in both aerobic and anaerobic exercise settings. However, the direct evidence for CAKG specifically is limited.

Alpha-ketoglutarate may play a role in cellular energy production as part of the Krebs cycle, but little human research exists regarding its supplementation and energy levels.

Overall, while there is some mechanistic rationale and indirect evidence (primarily from citrulline malate studies) suggesting a possible benefit for energy and exercise performance, the evidence supporting CAKG for treating or supporting general "lack of energy" is weak and mostly extrapolated. No large, high-quality clinical trials have specifically evaluated CAKG for this purpose. Therefore, the scientific evidence is limited (rated 2/5), and further research is needed to confirm any benefits.
