Evidence supporting the use of: Brewer's Yeast
For the health condition: Energy (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Brewer’s yeast has a long history of traditional use as a nutritional supplement, particularly valued for its B vitamin content. Historically, it has been recommended as a tonic for “energy” and general vitality, especially in the early to mid-20th century when vitamin deficiencies were more common. Brewer’s yeast is rich in B-complex vitamins (such as B1, B2, B3, B6, and folate), which play essential roles in energy metabolism by helping convert carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into usable cellular energy. However, while this nutritional rationale exists, there is limited direct scientific evidence demonstrating that supplemental brewer’s yeast significantly improves subjective feelings of energy or alleviates fatigue in healthy individuals. Most studies focus on its nutrient profile rather than clinical outcomes related to energy or fatigue. Therefore, its use for “energy” is primarily based on tradition and its rich B vitamin content, which may be beneficial in cases of dietary deficiency, but not strongly validated by contemporary clinical research for otherwise healthy people.
